Space in London comes at a premium and when you spend so much time racing round, dining should be sacred time out to enjoy conversation and a meal with people you love. TV dinners, come on people, turn it off and talk to each other! Remember the days where there were no phones on the table when you didn’t need to share a meal picture with the world? Some things should be left to enjoy in the moment… Anyway, from social get togethers where you crowd round for a Sunday roast with friends or just the two of you, a dining table is a must for bringing people together.

One of my clients has requested an extendable dining table for this very reason. A four seater allows for intimate get togethers and is more space efficient, especially in an open plan living environment where you’re looking to de-liniate from the lounge and kitchen. However, you don’t want to limit yourself to 4, extendable is the way to go. So I thought I’d share some of my favourite finds with you. Here’s a few points to remember if you’re updating your dining area.

  • If you want to layer your dining table onto a rug, make sure all the chairs fit well onto the rug and allow for space to draw your chair back. The rug will anchor and zone the space, but always oversize, skimping on a rug that looks too small will look entirely naff.
  • Think about spacing, if you’re positioning the table by a wall, make sure people have room to get out. Cosy yes, claustrophobic? No.
  • LIGHTING! My ideal scenario is a super sized pendant over that table that sits on a MASSIVE! rug. Vertical interest further anchors the space and on a dimmer, you can control the ambience. Ever noticed how the best restaurants and most wonderful dining experiences have exceptional lighting, it’s flattering, adds drama and sets the tone.
  • On that note, I’d always go for a round dining table over rectangular for that very reason. You can’t beat a group of friends sitting round, banter beating over the chink of glasses and raucous laughter.

Ok, on to the tables…

Top of the bargain picks was the Bjursta from Ikea. There’s a reason they’re the worlds largest furniture retailer, they sure can pimp out homeware to the masses at prices most mental, check this out and at £190 you can afford to get the dinner parties booked in! Here’s the stats if you need to try it at for size at home….

Here she is extended. Not my circular preference but not too large you can’t chat to folk at the other end of the table.

Ok so we’re moving up in price now and next on my list is this  piece from Wayfair.co.uk . It’s new to their range at £589.99. I like this table because it has a nice clean join in the middle to open and extend. Lines and curves, looks tidy, has a warm vibe to it but I’d probably opt for it being stained a shade darker as it’s a bit too traditional looking.  Space planning info…

Finally we’re on to the star piece and yes I’m afraid its’s the most expensive. This is the Bridge Extendable Dining Table from Heals at £1,095 is more pricey than the others but I like the mid century modern vibe about it. It’s available in 2 sizes but this one caters for 4-6. So here we go. They all have something to offer, personally I like the Ikea and the Heal’s model the best.
